The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) acknowledges the publication of the Muckamore Abbey Hospital Inquiry Report and the serious issues it highlights. RQIA is particularly mindful of the suffering and distress patients and their families experienced, and commend their courage and fortitude in engaging with the inquiry process. 

We recognise that the findings identify significant shortcomings in the care and oversight of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. These are deeply concerning and we are committed to reflecting fully on the report’s conclusions and recommendations and to progressing the necessary reforms earnestly and rapidly.
